How to use the gutter installation cost calculator
- Get the length. Add up every eave edge that sheds water; sloped gable ends do not get gutters. No tape? “Estimate from house size” uses floor area ÷ 10, as HomeGuide and This Old House do, so 1,800 sq ft means about 180 ft.
- Choose the material. Seamless aluminum, bent on site, is the default; vinyl, steel and copper have their own source rows.
- Switch on what applies: second story, 6 in gutters, tear-off, guards, downspouts, fascia.
- Check the layout. Footprint and pitch give the downspout count; the longest run and slope give the fall.
Compare the per-foot figure under the total, since most gutter bids are written per linear foot.
Gutter cost per foot by material
| Material | HomeGuide | Angi | Fixr | Homewyse or This Old House | Typical |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seamless aluminum | $10–$20 | $9–$13 | $14–$20 | Homewyse $10.41–$15.77 | $14 |
| Vinyl (PVC) | $8–$12 | — | $6–$11 | TOH $2.86 | $9 |
| Galvanized steel | $10–$35 | — | $12–$20 | TOH $8.02 | $16 |
| Copper | $25–$40 | — | $29–$40 | TOH $28.75 | $33 |
Installed prices from guides last updated between January 2025 and October 2026 (Fixr January 2025, HomeGuide October 2025, Homewyse May 2026, Angi and This Old House October 2026), all read on October 29, 2026. Each guide counts once, at the middle of its range, and the typical figure is their median rounded to the dollar. This Old House’s table comes from Homewyse, so it is not counted again for aluminum, where we opened Homewyse directly. Its figures are 200 ft totals ÷ 200 and run low because they leave out much of the labor.
Seamless and sectional are different products. Angi prices seamed aluminum at $7 to $10 per foot against $9 to $13 for seamless, and HomeGuide adds $3 to $5 per foot for seamless.
What a typical house pays
| Gutter length | This calculator, typical | Angi range | This Old House average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 ft | $1,400 | $700–$1,200 | $1,600 |
| 150 ft | $2,100 | $1,050–$1,800 | $2,400 |
| 200 ft | $2,800 | $1,400–$2,400 | $3,200 |
| 250 ft | $3,500 | — | $4,000 |
Seamless aluminum at $14 per foot, one story, no extras. Angi sits below that and This Old House above; HomeGuide’s one-story table is higher still, $2,200 to $4,500 for about 180 ft. Removing old gutters adds about $125 to the 150 ft job, the median of HomeGuide, Angi and Fixr.
Guards, height, size and fascia
- Gutter guards are two markets. Angi puts installed guards at $6 to $13 per foot. This Old House’s 2026 survey of 1,000 buyers of branded systems such as Leafguard and LeafFilter found $39.71 per foot. HomeGuide’s $15 to $45 spans both, so pick the tier that matches your quote: on 150 ft, about $1,500 against $6,000.
- Height. HomeGuide adds $1 to $3 per foot on a two-story house for ladders and safety gear.
- Size. Most houses use 5 in K-style. Six inch, $1 to $2 more per foot, suits large or steep roof planes and valleys that dump into one run.
- Fascia. Rotten fascia has to be replaced first: HomeGuide lists $5 to $12 per foot, Fixr $6 to $8.
HomeGuide also adds 10 to 30% for complicated rooflines, 15 to 25% for hard access and $50 to $200 for a permit; those are not in the total.
How many downspouts and how much slope
This Old House’s sizing guide gives a 2 × 3 in downspout about 600 sq ft of drainage area and a 3 × 4 in about 1,200 sq ft, after multiplying the roof footprint by a pitch factor: 1.05 at 4/12 to 5/12, 1.1 at 6/12 to 8/12, 1.2 at 9/12 to 11/12 and 1.3 at 12/12 or steeper. A 1,800 sq ft footprint at 6/12 is 1,980 sq ft, or four 2 × 3 outlets. The calculator also allows one outlet per 40 ft, since This Old House pitches longer runs from the middle to both ends, and shows the larger count. SMACNA treats 50 ft as the practical maximum per downspout, to limit thermal expansion; Amerimax suggests one per 20 ft, so a bid with more is not padded.
For slope, Amerimax’s minimum is ¼ in of fall per 10 ft, and This Old House’s how-to uses ½ in. A 40 ft run drops 1 in at the first rate and 2 in at the second.
If water pools at the foundation, the French drain gravel calculator sizes a trench to carry it away. The roof replacement cost calculator prices a new roof, and the soffit calculator covers the panels under the eaves.
Reading a gutter quote
Check that each bid states the length, gutter size and metal thickness (Homewyse prices 0.031 in aluminum), downspout count, hanger spacing, haul-away and who replaces damaged fascia. Then divide each total by the footage.
Figures are national; labor rates and access vary by region, so treat the result as a check on a written quote.

How this calculator gets its numbers. Full method: our methodology.
- Installed price per linear foot by material = median of each guide’s range midpoint, rounded to the nearest dollar: seamless aluminum $14 (four guides), vinyl $9, galvanized steel $16, copper $33 (three each). Low and high are the lowest and highest of those midpoints.
- This Old House’s gutter figures are Homewyse 2026 estimates, so it is counted only for materials where Homewyse was not opened directly; its per-foot values are its 200 ft totals ÷ 200.
- Extras from HomeGuide: two-story $1–$3 and 6 in gutters $1–$2 per ft, downspouts $30–$75 each. Fascia and removal: median of the guides listed below.
- Guards kept as two tiers: installer-grade $6–$13 per ft (Angi, typical $10) and branded systems $39.71 per ft (This Old House survey, rounded to $40; brand averages $39.59–$61.61).
- Downspouts = the larger of (footprint × pitch factor ÷ 600 sq ft for 2 × 3 in, or ÷ 1,200 for 3 × 4 in) and (length ÷ 40 ft), each rounded up. Slope drop = run ÷ 10 × ¼ or ½ in.
- Not included: HomeGuide’s 10–30% for complex roofs, 15–25% for hard access, permits and custom colors. National estimates read Oct 29, 2026; prices vary by region. Angi and HomeAdvisor share data and count once.

Frequently asked questions
How much do seamless gutters cost per foot?
About $14 per linear foot installed for seamless aluminum, the median of HomeGuide, Angi, Fixr and Homewyse, whose central values run from $11 to $17. Copper runs about $33 per foot.
How much does it cost to install gutters on a 2,000 sq ft house?
A 2,000 sq ft house needs roughly 200 ft of gutter, or about $2,800 for seamless aluminum at $14 per foot before guards, removal or a second story. Prices vary by region.
Are gutter guards worth adding to new gutters?
They cut down on cleaning where trees overhang the roof. Installer-grade guards run about $6 to $13 per foot (Angi); branded systems average $39.71 per foot in This Old House’s 2026 survey.
How many downspouts does a house need?
Roughly one 2 × 3 in downspout per 600 sq ft of pitch-adjusted roof area and at least one for every 40 ft of gutter, so a 150 ft single-story house with a 1,800 sq ft footprint at 6/12 needs about four.
What is the correct slope for gutters?
At least ¼ inch of fall per 10 feet toward the downspout, per Amerimax; This Old House uses ½ inch per 10 feet. A 40 foot run falls 1 to 2 inches.
