How to use the door installation cost calculator
- Entry doors. Enter how many front or side entry doors you are replacing, pick steel, fiberglass, wood or wrought iron, and say whether they have sidelights.
- Other doors. Enter counts for interior, bifold, double, patio, French, storm, fire-rated and bulkhead doors. Leave the rest at zero.
- Extras. Add new rough frames where the old jamb is rotted or out of square, new deadbolts, painting, and any brand-new openings cut into a wall.
- Permit. Tick it if a new opening goes through a load-bearing wall; that line covers the permit and an engineer’s plans.
The headline is a typical total: interior pre-hung doors use the median of three sources ($535.50 per door), and every other line uses the midpoint of its HomeGuide range. The low and high ends and the number of doors are shown under it. Type a contractor’s total into Your quote to see whether it sits below, inside or above the range.

|---|---|
| Interior pre-hung (bedroom, bath, closet) | $155–$688 |
| Bifold or folding | $200–$850 |
| Steel entry | $300–$2,700 |
| Fiberglass entry | $400–$2,800 |
| Wood entry | $580–$2,900 |
| Wrought iron entry | $1,750–$5,750 |
| Exterior double doors | $1,124–$5,560 |
| Sliding patio | $450–$3,500 |
| French doors | $650–$5,600 |
| Aluminum and glass storm door | $300–$480 |
| Fire-rated | $450–$1,100 |
| Bulkhead or basement | $1,000–$3,900 |
All figures are HomeGuide’s installed national ranges, which include the door, labor, mounting hardware, threshold and supplies, and usually removing the old door. With sidelights, HomeGuide puts a steel entry door at $1,180 to $4,000, fiberglass at $1,000 to $5,000, wood at $1,600 to $4,600 and iron at $3,100 to $10,600. A transom window above the door adds $300 to $900.
Other sources land close to HomeGuide for a basic door but not identical. Fixr puts entry door installation at $975 to $1,773 with a $1,353 average and interior doors at $374 to $697. Angi gives a $1,217 average across door installations ($497 to $1,960) and $802 for an interior door ($363 to $1,241). The 2025 Cost vs Value report, still the latest edition in October 2026, prices a steel entry door replacement at $2,435 nationally, which is a contractor’s full-scope job with new jamb and lockset. These are national figures and local prices vary by region.
Labor, time and what is included
HomeGuide puts door installation labor at $30 to $80 an hour, plus any call-out fee. That works out to about $100 to $300 for an interior door and $230 to $800 for an exterior one. The difference is the work involved. A pre-hung interior door arrives already hung in its jamb and takes 1 to 2 hours. A front door takes 3 to 8 hours because it has to be set plumb, shimmed, sealed against weather, flashed and fitted with locks.
A pre-hung door is a door slab already hinged in its frame with the stops attached. A slab is the door alone, which costs less to buy but takes longer to fit: the installer has to mortise the hinges and drill for the lockset to match the existing jamb. HomeGuide reports installed totals of $188 to $550 for a pre-hung door and $325 to $1,150 for a slab, because of that extra labor.
When the old frame is damaged, the calculator’s new-frame line adds $130 to $320 per door. A new deadbolt is about $120 to $220 for the lock plus $30 to $60 to install. Painting a new door runs $75 to $150 inside and $125 to $225 outside.
Cutting a new doorway
Adding a door where there was none is a framing job first. HomeGuide prices cutting and framing a new exterior opening at $600 to $1,200 and an interior opening at $400 to $600, before the door itself. If the wall is load-bearing, a header has to carry the load over the opening, and the job usually needs a permit and an engineer’s plans, which HomeGuide puts at $250 to $1,000.
Drywall and trim patching around a new opening is not in that figure. The drywall calculator and drywall mud calculator size the patch, and the paint calculator covers repainting the wall.
Steel entry doors and resale value
The 2025 Cost vs Value report from the Journal of Light Construction (the latest edition as of October 2026; no 2026 report has been published) prices replacing a 3′0″ × 6′8″ entry door and its jambs with a 20-gauge steel unit that has a half-glass panel, new threshold, brick-mold, casings and lockset. The national average was $2,435, and the report estimated the project added $5,270 in resale value, or 216% of its cost. A garage door replacement averaged $4,672. Like all Cost vs Value figures, these are national averages for a defined scope, and your local result will differ.
Code points for exterior and garage doors
- Egress door. The International Residential Code, section R311.2, requires at least one side-hinged egress door with a clear width of at least 32 in and a clear height of at least 78 in. Clear width is measured between the face of the door and the stop with the door open 90°, so it is less than the door’s nominal width.
- Garage to house. HomeGuide notes that most building codes require a fire-rated door between the house and an attached garage. Check your local code for the exact rating before you replace that door.
- Energy. ENERGY STAR sets door criteria by how much glass the door has. A solid door and a full-glass door have different targets, so compare NFRC ratings for the same style.
- Lead paint. In homes built before 1978, paid work that disturbs painted trim or jambs must be done by an EPA lead-safe certified firm.

How this calculator gets its numbers. Full method: our methodology.
- Interior pre-hung doors: typical price = median of HomeGuide’s pre-hung range midpoint ($421.50), Fixr’s range midpoint ($535.50) and Angi’s $802 average, i.e. $535.50 per door.
- Installed prices per door are national estimates that vary by region, from HomeGuide. They include the door, labor, mounting hardware, threshold and supplies; removing and disposing of the old door is typically part of the job.
- Entry doors are priced by material, single or with sidelights. Other door types use HomeGuide’s installed ranges by type. Totals are counts × the low and high price; the headline adds the typical interior-door price and the midpoint of every other line.
- Extras are added per item: new rough frame $130–$320, deadbolt $150–$280 ($120–$220 lock plus $30–$60 to install), painting $75–$150 per interior and $125–$225 per exterior door, a new exterior opening $600–$1,200 or interior opening $400–$600, and $250–$1,000 for a permit and engineer when a load-bearing wall is cut.
- The steel entry door benchmark is the Cost vs Value 2025 national average for replacing a 3′0″ × 6′8″ door and jambs with a 20-gauge steel unit.
